Halloween Costumes for 2024
October is one of the best months in San Francisco when it comes to events and activities. Fleet Week brings thousands of people to the city to watch the annual Air Show and you can enjoy lots of great local events like the Castro Street Fair and The Italian Heritage Parade in North Beach. It’s also a great time for sports with The Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks beginning their seasons, The Niners playing at Levi’s Stadium and even some possible post-season action for the San Francisco Giants or Oakland A’s, depending on the year. However, there is one thing that stands out from the rest if you are looking for things to do in San Francisco in October…Halloween! There are lots of reasons to love Halloween. Scary movies, spooky decorations and awesome parties are all part of the experience, but in our opinion, it’s all about the costumes. 2024 Halloween Costumes
Whether you are looking for some traditional favorites or want to get creative with some new, trendy ideas based on pop culture references, you will have a lot of options to choose from.
Here are some of the trendiest costumes for this year.
Squid Games
The Netflix Series became one of the most popular shows of 2021, so it’s natural that you are going to see a lot of Squid Games costumes around this year. Besides being a popular show, the costumes are pretty simple, so you won’t have to worry about any makeup of special effects. There are plenty of track suits inspired by the film on Amazon, as well ask Front Man Masks and Red Jump Suits.
Zoom-Inspired Costumes
When the whole world was in quarantine and people were able to work from home, Zoom Meetings became a common occurrence in most households. Whether you were using it for meetings or to connect with friends, it became a valuable tool to connect with the outside world. The new technology also created some memorable meme-worthy situations such as “I am not a cat” and, of course, the worst day of Jeffrey Toobin’s life. There are a lot of creative ways to dress up as a Zoom meeting, so you will have a lot of ways to make it unique.
Bernie Sanders
The former presidential candidates casual attire and body language in a photo from the Presidential Inauguration, captured the hearts of many and became one of the most popular memes of 2021. Re-creating this costume should be fairly easy, so you will probably see a lot of Bernie’s running around SF. It’s also a great option if we get a little cold weather in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just throw on a big coat, some hand-knitted mittens and a mask. You can also upgrade the costume with a Bernie Sanders Wig.
Joe Exotic
Another Netflix-inspired costume, Joe Exotic from “Tiger King” will be a fun Halloween Costume for 2021. His signature mullet, a wild-animal print shirt and a stuffed tiger will come together perfectly for an easily recognizable costume that will surely get you some attention.
Ted Lasso
The Series from Apple TV has become increasingly popular so we should see a bunch of Ted Lassos’s running through the streets of San Francisco. If you are looking for an easy costume with a big impact, this is a great choice. Grab a Ted Lasso Jacket (there are plenty available on Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, etc.) and pair with a big mustache, white visor and some sunglasses.
Wandavision
Taking place from the 1950s to the 2000’s Wandavision covers a lot of different styles and the costume designers for the show created a lot of great options to copy for Halloween Costumes. You can choose one of the great outfits from any of the episodes, or even copy the Halloween Costumes from the Wandavision Halloween Episode. With so many different styles, this is a great theme for groups.
Britney Spears
While people have been dressing up in Britney Spears-inspired costumes since the infamous school girl out fit in the “Baby One More Time” video, The #freebritney movement and ultimate release from her conservatorship have once again brought the popular singer to the top of the headlines. Choose from the classic school girl outfit, the “snake” outfit or one of the many different things she wore over the years. You could even go with the shaved-head Britney from her 2007 meltdown, but that’s probably in poor taste considering everything she was dealing with over the last decade.
COVID-19
Maybe it’s too soon, but considering that things are getting better by the day, you can probably get away with a coronavirus-inspired Halloween Costume. Then again, it may not go over well, so be careful with this one. We will probably see some people dressed as the actual virus (an easy one to make at home), but you can always go as one of the hero doctor’s and nurses that fought to fight the disease. Another idea would be to dress up as a bottle of the Moderna or Pfizer Vaccine.
A note about Halloween Costumes:
The world is a little different than it was a few years ago. Black Lives Matter, #metoo and the fight for equality across all races, cultures and sexual orientation have caused a lot of changes in the way society reacts to different situations. That being said, when planning your Halloween costume, it is important to be sensitive to these issues. Things like blackface, transphobic costumes and cultural stereotypes are not acceptable and besides being offensive, they will likely cause you problems. Halloween is a fun holiday and there are plenty of funny, sexy and weird options for you to choose from, so make sure you think before you throw on that controversial costume.
